Verification about Eagles and College Acceptance

Verification about Eagles and College Acceptance

Scouting Magazine has a nice example from the University of Oklahoma

Click here for an article in Scouting Magazine that starts out with, "Read what one major university said about Scouting in an acceptance letter."

You can read for yourself the acceptance letter sent by the University of Oklahoma to an Eagle Scout named Andrew. Look for this quote: "While reading your application, we noticed you are an Eagle Scout. Congrats on that achievement! Your commitment and perseverance are to be commended."

As the article pointed out, "Andrew was [not] accepted solely because he’s an Eagle Scout. His academic record, test scores and involvement in other extracurriculars were big factors, too."

Over 100 people responded to the magazine article, typically telling of a similar experience with college applications or with job interviews. More interesting were comments from people actually involved in the acceptance process. One said, "I can faithfully report that the achievement of the rank of Eagle is always mentioned when we discuss applicants."

Neil Armstrong in the Movies and Scouts

Neil Armstrong in the Movies and in the Scouts

Scouting Magazine takes a look.

Just prior to the October release of "First Man," the story of Neil Armstrong preparing for his historic flight to the moon, Scouting Magazine ran a story called "10 Scouting facts you probably didn’t know about Eagle Scout Neil Armstrong." Click here for details.

As the article points out, the "Space Exploration" merit badge didn't exist when Armstrong was a youth, so that was not one of the 26 that he earned on his way to Eagle.

Girls in "Scouts BSA" are not "Girl Scouts"

Please remember: Girls in "Scouts BSA" are not "Girl Scouts"

The Girl Scout organization is upset, and the Boy Scout organization is asking us to respond with courtesy and respect.

The Girl Scout organization, "Girl Scouts of the USA," (GSUSA) filed a lawsuit in November that accused the Boy Scouts of trademark infringement. Click here for an article posted by Fortune Magazine that gives details.

While the lawyers gear up for battle, the Boy Scout organization published a flyer with advice to Boy Scout leaders to prevent things from getting worse. Click here to see the flyer. Here's a sampling of the advice:

  • We agree that Girl Scouts are good. A girl should choose the program that works best for her.
  • Watch your syntax. Don't say "Girl" followed by "Scout." Our program is called "Scouts BSA."
  • Don't try to compare the Boy Scout program to the Girl Scout program.
  • "A Scout is Courteous. The Boy Scouts of America applauds the work of the GSUSA in service to our nation's youth and is committed to respecting  the organization's rights and programs."

Scoutbook for Tracking Advancement - Free on Jan 1

Scoutbook for Tracking Advancement - Free on Jan 1

Here is a recent posting about Scoutbook

Starting January 1, 2019, Scoutbook subscriptions will be free to all BSA units! Scoutbook is an online unit management tool that ensures that you never miss a Scouting moment-from tracking advancements to milestone achievements along the Scouting adventure. When councils with Scoutbook accounts for their units need to renew these unit subscriptions this fall, they will not pay any renewal fees effective September 1, 2018. For units currently without a Scoutbook account, they can begin their free Scoutbook unit subscription on January 1, 2019. Learn more here.

Here is a reprint that was posted on this blog last February

Upcoming Change to Advancement Tracking

Since 2006, Troops and Packs have posted their advancement information by way of the Scoutnet Internet Advancement website. That will change soon in 2018, when units will instead create an account with "Scoutbook Lite" and post advancement information into that site. Click here for an article in Scouting Magazine that gives more details.

The Scoutbook app was created in 2013 by Shawn Jackson, himself a unit leader. He got lots of good reviews on his Facebook page from early adapters, which encouraged him to keep adding new features. Meanwhile there were plenty of other software packages out there, most notably TroopMaster and PackMaster and Troopkit.

Everything changed in 2015, when BSA National acquired Scoutbook, and everything changed a second time just now, where all units will soon be using "Scoutbook Lite" instead of Internet Advancement. This is surely bad news for all those other packages. Most likely existing units will continue to use TroopMaster, etc., because they're used to it, but expect new units to start off with Scoutbook.

So how good is Scoutbook? Scouting Magazine called it "awesome." Click here to access a promotion video with Scout leaders praising its advancement tracking, which is not just "complete/not complete", but also tracks each advancement requirement separately. The snapshot above shows how one Scout is progressing with his Climbing merit badge. The promo video shows how a Den Leader can use his/her smartphone to log in and record belt loop requirements while they're still fresh in his/her mind. The promo video also shows kids accessing the site to see their own status and then responding by posting, "I just completed another requirement on my own. Here's proof."

Preventing a Stolen Troop Trailer

Preventing a Stolen Troop Trailer

Advice from some experts
(Maybe they learned from sad experience)

"Bryan on Scouting" says, "Acts of theft don’t get much lower than stealing from a pack, troop, or crew. But search Google News for “troop trailer stolen,” and you’ll see it happens all the time."

Click here for 12 suggestions for preventing a theft, some of which are definitely thinking outside the box.

Suggestion #1 is to buy a wheel lock like the one that some police departments use to boot illegally parked cars. Suggestion #10 is to remove one of the wheels and store it inside the trailer.

The Smithsonian Reviews Scouting over the Years

The Smithsonian Reviews Scouting over the Years

Click here for an article in the October 2018 issue of the Smithsonian Magazine: "Read this story and earn your merit badge in U.S. Cultural history."

You can see pictures of old Boy Scout and Girl Scout merit badges, such as 1911 "Automobiling," with this caption: "Less than 1 percent of the U.S. population owned a car when the Boy Scouts first learned to drive." The "Radio" badge was introduced in 1938 then updated in 1953 as TV started to take off.

In 1920, the Girl Scouts added "Business Woman," but it was mostly about clerical skills. But recently the Girl Scouts launched 24 STEM-related badges, "on topics from cybersecurity to robotics."

Cub Requirements - Handy Summary Booklet

Cub Requirements - Handy Summary Booklet

Click here to download a PDF summary of 2018 belt loop and adventure pin requirements for all dens in one handy booklet.

Very little has changed from the 2016-17 requirements, mostly minor changes to the text.

The Arrow of Light "Scouting Adventure" pin had the most text changes, with references to "Boy Scout troop" revised to just "troop." The "Maestro" adventure pin now refers to "his or her homemade musical instrument."

Two badges were renamed. The Webelos/Arrow of Light elective is now "Sports," renamed from "Sportsman," and the Arrow of Light required pin is now "Outdoor Adventurer," renamed from "Outdoorsman."

Welcoming Girls into the Scout Program - Part 7

Welcoming Girls into the Scout Program - Part 7

Advice from Early Adapters

If your Cub Pack will accept girls, advice from early adapters was published in Scouting magazine. Click here to see the article called, "When and how you can start welcoming girls into Cub Scouting."

The article lists 7 steps:
  1.  Understand how packs will be structured.
  2. Get chartered organization approval.
  3. Mark your calendar.
  4. Get volunteers primed to launch.
  5. Start thinking about program.
  6. Ask your fellow volunteers to begin recruiting families.
  7. Know where to go with questions.
What seems to be missing is, "8. How to publicize: Sample flyers, sample newspaper ads."

Welcoming Girls into the Scout Program - Part 5

Welcoming Girls into the Scout Program - Part 5

Confusion about the Name Change - Just Boy Scout troops are affected

No change: Our umbrella organization headquartered in Irvine Texas is still "Boy Scouts of America."

Change here: The Boy Scouts of America organization sponsors 6 programs:
  1. Cub Scouting
  2. Boy Scouting
  3. Venturing
  4. Sea Scouting
  5. Exploring
  6. STEM Scouts (still a pilot)
In February 2019 the "Boy Scouting" program will change its name to "Scouts BSA"

Welcoming Girls into the Scout Program - Part 4

Welcoming Girls into the Scout Program - Part 4

Morphing from "Boy Scouts" into "Family Scouting" with Memorandums of Understanding"

Some things that have happened already

•   The program name for "Boy Scouts" (age 11-17) was changed to "Scouts BSA." Click here to see the official announcement, and click here to see a related article in the NY Times by reporter Maya Salam.

•   A few years back, Northern NJ Council started running three "Family Camping Weekends" each spring. Camp Lewis was upgraded with flush toilets, and the three districts were each tasked with running one of the weekends. Three Rivers was in charge of the recent May 5-6 weekend.

•   When BSA National announced that girls are now eligible to join Cub Scouting, NNJC wanted to ensure that every single Cub Pack was aware of  what was going on, and so they mailed a Memorandum of Understanding to the Institutional Head of each Chartered Organization. District Execs were asked to follow up.

The memorandums have two parts, with Part-1 being new and Part-2 being old and familiar. Part-1 is a check-off choice of, in effect, "Yes, we will let girls into our Cub pack" or "No, we're not ready for girls." (The familiar Part-2 contains stipulations that the Institutional Head agrees to each year when he/she signs the annual recharter papers, things like finding appropriate unit leaders and providing a space where the unit can meet, etc.)

Changes to Scout Youth Protection Training

Changes to Scout Youth Protection Training

IMPORTANT: This big change affects all registered adults on a troop, pack, or crew roster.

1. The online Youth Protection Training module has been greatly revised.
2. All registered adults MUST take the new course. The deadline is October 1, 2018.
3. Yes, you MUST take the new course before the deadline even if your previous certification is still current.

The revised training now includes more insights both from experts and from survivors. There's more information about bullying, neglect, exposure to violence, emotional abuse, etc.

Most important for unit leaders is the advice about how to prevent, recognize and respond.

There's another change that affects non-registered parents who assist on campouts and summer camp: They may have to register! Here's the official wording:
Effective June 1, 2018, adults accompanying a Scouting unit who are present at the activity for 72 total hours or more must be registered as a leader, including completion of a criminal background check and Youth Protection Training. The 72 hours need not be consecutive.

The new YPT course replaced the old version on My.Scouting.org. Launching it is more complicated, so it's worth taking some time to first read these instructions posted by the Northern NJ Council.

You can get more information from a March 2018 posting on ScoutingWire.
