NNJC Offering Wilderness First Aid

Two 8-hour Saturday sessions in Oakland - March 23 then April 6

This 16 hour class will be conducted at the Council Training Center in Oakland on two Saturdays. Wilderness First Aid is sponsored by the ECSI (Emergency Care and Safety Institute and has been developed by the Wilderness Medical Society and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.  It fulfills the training requirement for adult leaders for the adventure camps at Philmont, Northern Tier, Summit or Sea Base).  This program is for all leaders, and will also  be of interest for summer camp and weekend trips or just for around home with the family.

A second pair of classes will be offered on April 27 then May 11.

Girl-friendly Scout handbooks now available

Girls who are members of a Scouts BSA all-girl troop will want to buy this version of the Scout handbook, with photos of girls in action along with appropriate girl-friendly pronouns.

Just to be fair, BSA National cloned a boy-friendly version -- completely identical to the girl version, but with different photos and different pronouns. Note that boys can buy either the new handbook or the old existing 13th edition.

With one exception, rank requirements have not changed since last year, and all rank requirements apply equally to boys and girls. The exception is a one-time relaxation of the requirement to complete Eagle Scout prior to the 18th birthday, which applies to girls (and boys) who first join a troop in 2019. Mandatory Training for Adults - Part 2

The Part-2 requirement for 2020 is to have all direct-contact leaders go through position-specific training.

By way of review, Part-1 affected all units that rechartered in January 2019. The mandate was to enforce Youth Protection Training (YPT) certification for every adult listed on the unit's roster. Any adult without current YPT certification had to be dropped. (Exceptions were Tiger adult parent-partners and the unit's Executive Officer.)

Part-2 will affect all units when they recharter in January 2020. The mandate will apply to all "direct contact" leaders: Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmaster, Den Leader, Scoutmaster, Assistant Cubmaster, Crew Adviser, Post Adviser. These leaders must go through position-specific training if they have not already done so.

Presumably, most leaders will opt to sit through the online training module, which can be found and launched from My.Scouting.org (see left image). Another possibility is to request that a trainer come to your unit for an in-person session. District Exec Lumie Perez is the contact. Lumie can also provide a list of your unit's leaders, showing who is okay and who needs to get it done.

Verification about Eagles and College Acceptance 

Scouting Magazine has a nice example from the University of Oklahoma

Click here for an article in Scouting Magazine that starts out with, "Read what one major university said about Scouting in an acceptance letter."

You can read for yourself the acceptance letter sent by the University of Oklahoma to an Eagle Scout named Andrew. Look for this quote: "While reading your application, we noticed you are an Eagle Scout. Congrats on that achievement! Your commitment and perseverance are to be commended."

As the article pointed out, "Andrew was [not] accepted solely because he’s an Eagle Scout. His academic record, test scores and involvement in other extracurriculars were big factors, too."

Over 100 people responded to the magazine article, typically telling of a similar experience with college applications or with job interviews. More interesting were comments from people actually involved in the acceptance process. One said, "I can faithfully report that the achievement of the rank of Eagle is always mentioned when we discuss applicants."
