Welcoming Girls into the Scout Program - Part 3

Welcoming Girls into the Scout Program - Part 3

CBS Sunday Morning did a long piece on the subject, starting with the girls who are now officially registered Cub Scouts in Portland Oregon Pack 203.

Click here to see the CBS Sunday Morning segment. What you'll see:

•  The girls in Pack 203 are clearly having a great time, while some of their older brothers look pretty unhappy. But they're willing to go with the change.

•  Switch to older Boy Scouts in Salt Lake City Troop 1262. These guys are having a great time building an igloo and getting a winter campfire going. This is the kind of activity that have defined Boy Scouts for over a century. Chief Scout Exec Michael Surbaugh said, "Kids want what we have. Outdoors and camping and hiking -- this is what we do!"

•  A little history and a plug for Eagle Scouts, citing Michael Bloomberg, President Gerald Ford, and astronaut Neil Armstrong.

•  Declining membership in the Boy Scout organization is a real problem. Scouts lost two thirds of the numbers they had in the 1970's. Surbaugh said that changes to the American family were a big factor in the decline, such as more moms in the workforce. Meanwhile, the Scouts did not adapt.

•  Switch back to Salt Lake City Troop 1262, which has mostly Burmese refugees. Their leader is a refugee from Cambodia. They were already familiar with the outdoors, since they had to hunt and fish just to stay alive. One of them said, "If not for Scouts, I would have joined a gang, because that's where all my friends are."

•  Pushback from the Girl Scouts: "We were really taken aback," said Sylvia Acevedo, Chief Executive Officer. She said that the Girl Scouts also offer the same high adventure programs that the Boy Scouts offer, plus they have "the best leadership program designed and developed for girls." She said, "We know what it takes to get girls to succeed."

•  Switch back to Troop 1262 with five new Eagle Scouts, "An honor their sisters may soon pursue as well."

Empire Scout Shop Closure

Empire Scout Shop Closure

In its wisdom, the Boy Scout National Supply Group decided that it was time to close the Empire Scout Shop in New York City with no replacement.

The flyer on the left gives the link for the ScoutStuff online catalog plus the other Scout Shops that are still open, including the one in Oakland inside the Northern NJ Council Service Center.

However, there is a Plan-B for Scoutmasters and Cubmasters who formerly purchased advancement badges and awards from the Empire shop. The Greater New York Councils are willing to accept orders by e-mail and hold the items for pick-up in their Empire State Building office. Click here for details.

The Scout Shop closure will be a disappointment to all the Scout tourists who come to New York City from around the country and from foreign countries.

Not sorry to see the Scout Shop close will be all the people who dropped in prior to Halloween looking for a cool costume to wear at a party. These folks were all dismissed unceremoniously with the stern lecture, "IT'S NOT A COSTUME! IT'S A UNIFORM!"

Registration Fees - Save this Chart

Effective December 1, 2017
(Repost - First posted in September 2017)

Click here for a chart showing how much to charge a new Scout or Cub (or adult) recruit when he signs up.

The fee for a full 12 months is $42 (plus an optional $12 for Boys' Life = $54). The chart shows how to pro-rate the fee, so you should charge less for a Scout who signs up in the middle of the year.

Example: Most Three Rivers District units recharter in January, which means that your fiscal year starts in February and ends in January. Thus anyone you recruit in January or February pays the full amount. A March recruit pays for 11 months, April pays for 10, etc. When you recruit in September, charge for 5 months: Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan.

Note how the chart is titled "Registration and Insurance." That's because of the high insurance rates in New Jersey. Other Scout councils in other states likely charge just $33 (= $2.75 per month), but NNJC had to impose a $9 surcharge to cover our high premiums.
